Have you ever had to bite a mold to get a 3d model of your teeth made? If you have ever had braces or needed a dental implement like a bridge, crown, or implant, you might have had to use the old-fashioned method of making a dental model. Traditionally, this involves biting into trays filled with a material that hardens after a certain amount of time. Many patients have complained about the discomfort, bad taste, or strange feeling of having these trays in their mouths. But luckily, modern dental technology allows us to skip this old method and use a more digital method.
Intraoral scanning uses a device to fully map your teeth and gums. It creates a 3d digital model that allows your dentist to quickly get access to your unique bite alignment. Not only does this mean you don’t have to bite on a mold tray for a few minutes, it also allows dentists to quickly design and create the unique dental implements you need. Because the data is already moved to a digital model, it is much easier to digitally create the design for your bridge, crown, or aligners. In the past, dentists would have to take the mold, wait for it to set, and then use it to create your dental materials, but now everything can be done quickly and digitally with 3D modeling. Patients love it because it is a quick and easy process, and dentists love it because it allows them to gain access to a digital model they can use to effectively design your unique crown or bridge.
There are a variety of procedures that require the creation of a dental tool that is unique to the patient. For example, if you are straightening your teeth with aligners you will need your teeth scanned so that the aligners are perfect fits for your teeth. Additionally, if you need a bridge, you will need a 3D model so that the new tooth fits correctly between the teeth on either side. Basically speaking, if you are adding any dental element to your mouth either permanently or temporarily you will need a model of your teeth made to ensure that it fits in your mouth correctly.
