As family dentists, we often talk to kids about what to expect when they lose their baby teeth. But when an adult loses their adult teeth they may need a dental implant or a dental bridge. A dental bridge is a false tooth that is held in place by using the two adjacent teeth on either side. Whether you lose a tooth due to an injury or because you need to have it removed, a dental bridge can help you keep your smile intact.
What Are Dental Bridges Made From?
There are a variety of materials that can be used to make false teeth. Dental implants, cavity fillings, crowns, and dental bridges all use similar materials to mimic the look of teeth while also decreasing any special maintenance that would be needed. Dental bridges are also designed to durable so that they will last for years. Dental bridges are generally made using ceramic or porcelain, however, some patients do get metal teeth including gold teeth.
Types of Dental Bridges
Your dentist can choose from a variety of dental bridges depending on what tooth is being replaced. There are four main types of dental bridges.
- A traditional bridge is a bridge that places false teeth between two existing teeth. A crown is applied to the real teeth on either side to hold the false tooth (or teeth) in place. This is the most common dental bridge and it works as long as there are teeth on either side of the missing tooth.
- A cantilever bridge is similar to a traditional bridge in that the false tooth is held in place using a dental crown on another tooth. However, instead of a crown being placed on both teeth on either side of the gap, a cantilever bridge only uses one tooth. This is used in situations where there are not two teeth that can effectively act as anchors for the false tooth.
- A Maryland dental bridge uses the same two tooth method as a traditional bridge. However instead of using dental crowns on the real teeth, a Maryland bridge uses metal or porcelain that is bonded to the backs of the real teeth to hold the fake tooth in place.
- Implant-supported bridges use dental implants as their anchors instead of existing teeth. Implant-supported bridges are considered the most stable option available. This procedure requires two surgeries, first dental implants need to be installed into the mouth, then the bridge needs to be added later.
