The typical ways of keeping your teeth and mouth healthy at home is what everyone else knows and does – brushing, flossing, and rinsing. There are things you could be overlooking and simple things that you can do to improve your overall oral health.
Tips on oral care at home
- Never go to bed without brushing your teeth. Sometimes this is hard because at the end of the day, you are exhausted and as you’re walking to bed, the last thing you want to do is to brush your teeth. But it’s a very important step because when you brush before you go to bed, you’re getting off all the food and drinks you’ve had throughout the day that’s still left in your mouth or on your teeth.
- Brush your tongue. Plaque builds up on your tongue faster than anywhere else in your mouth. This is the leading cause of bad breath and left untreated it can cause bacterial diseases.
- Reduce the number of sweet drinks you have. Sugary drinks are particularly bad for oral health because liquid can go in between all your teeth and stay there, not to mention how hard it is to get off.
- Replace your toothbrush. Most people have a habit of keeping their toothbrush for longer than they should. A typical toothbrush should be replaced every three to four months – or sooner if the bristles are starting to be frayed.
- Use a mouthwash with fluoride in it. Flouride helps strengthen enamel on your teeth which is what protects your teeth from everything you eat and drink.
- Treat flossing like you do brushing. Would you ever go a day without brushing your teeth? No, right? The same should go for flossing!
- See your dentist regularly. Your dentist is able to clean your teeth more than you would be able to with brushing and flossing. If anything is irregular, your dentist is also able to spot that and treat you immediately.
