Dental Sealants For Preventative Care in Revere MA

Located in Revere Massachusetts, the All Pro Dental office provides many different preventative care treatments. This includes dental sealants, which are different from dental fillings. While fillings are used to after dental decay has eroded a part of a tooth, dental sealants are used to protect teeth from erosion in the first place. Sealants are a thin, plastic coating that is placed on the surface of the teeth to prevent plaque buildup and cavities. Sealants are typically placed on the back molars and are recommended for children as soon as they start to get each set of their molars (ages 5-7 for first molars, 11-14 for second molars). What Are Dental Sealants?

A dental sealant is a thin coating that is placed on the teeth. Initially it is a liquid that is spread on the chewing surfaces of molars. Once the liquid is placed the sealant is hardened. This provides an extra layer of protection between bacteria and a tooth. When we think of the anatomy of a tooth, it is important to understand the layers of the tooth. Deep inside a tooth is the pulp where all of the nerves and soft tissue is. The pulp is encapsulated by the dentin which is a yellow/brownish material inside the tooth. The outermost layer of the tooth is the enamel which is white. Cavities form when bacteria cause a process called demineralization. Basically, the enamel is broken down and the dentin is exposed. As soon as the dentin is exposed, we would consider it a cavity. Enamel doesn’t come back and the decay can continue to spread until the tooth is infected. When dentin is exposed a dental filling is recommended where the exposed area is cleaned/removed and then filled with a synthetic material to protect the remaining tooth. Sealants add an extra layer outside of the enamel which helps prevent cavities from forming in the first place.

At What Ages To Patients Get Dental Sealants?

It is recommended that dental sealants are placed as soon as you get your molars. Primary molars or baby teeth erupt between ages 5-7. Even though these teeth are temporary and will fall out, your kids will have them for a few years. Sealants are still recommended because cavities can quickly form. Dental decay spreads from tooth to tooth and deeper into the mouth. There is often a misconception that damage to baby teeth doesn’t really matter since those teeth are temporary, but cavities can cause serious problems and even affect the incoming adult teeth. Speaking of, adult molars erupt between the ages of 11-14 which is when pre-teens and teenagers should get sealants. Sealants are only used for molars because the natural geometry of molars makes them especially susceptible to dental decay in the indents where food and bacteria can gather.

What Is The Process of Getting Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are often done as part of a routine dental exam or cleaning. You do not need to set up a special dental appointment for them. As long as your kids are seeing their dentist twice per year they will likely get recommended sealants when their molars begin erupting. During a dental sealants treatment the teeth are cleaned (as part of the usual dental cleaning) and then the teeth are dried. A small amount of an acid etching solution is placed on the tops of the molars to make the surface of the teeth rough so the sealants can easily bond to the teeth. The sealant material is placed on to the teeth and a special curing light is used to cause the sealant to harden and bond permanently to the tooth. Dental sealants can last up to five years so it may be necessary to have them replaced periodically. However, sealants are not usually placed on molars that have already had dental fillings.
