Dental Implant Treatments

When it comes to losing adult teeth, it is important to consider your dental options. Replacing lost adult teeth is not just cosmetic. While many patients might be looking to replace their teeth because of the gaps in their smile, there are many health reasons you should replace your teeth. There are many different options including dental bridges that place a false tooth in-between healthy teeth, dental implants that replace singular teeth, or over-denture implants that replace a large number of teeth similar to how dentures work. Our office provides a variety of tooth replacement treatments. We work with our patients to create tailored restoration plans that work for them. Benefits Of Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the best choices when it comes to replacing lost adult teeth. Dental bridges work by replacing the crown of the tooth (or the section of the tooth that you normally see) but they do not replace the entire structure of the tooth. Dental implants use implanted posts to replace not only the crown but the root. For this reason, dental implants tend to be more durable over a longer period of time. Moreover, there are some concerns with utilizing dental bridges because they can add some stress to the healthy teeth that are used as anchors. Dental implants can also be used as an alternative for dentures. Similar to dental bridges, traditional removable dentures only replace the crowns of your teeth. Over-denture implants or “implant-supported” dentures are permanently placed in the mouth and mirror the way natural teeth function.

But dental implants aren’t for everyone. First and foremost, they are often not covered by dental insurance or receive less coverage than other dental options. Additionally, dental implants require a surgical process and require jawbone density to support the implants. Some patients might not physically have the bone density necessary to support the implant. This is why it is important to work with an experienced dental team that can help you get your best outcome by going over all your options.

Are Dental Implants Right For Me?

Almost any patient can be a good candidate for dental implants. However, there are some factors to consider. Gum disease or periodontal disease can impact the success of a dental implant. Gum disease can weaken the jawbone which can lead to implant failure. Similarly, if you already have experienced bone loss due to gum disease or other health issues you might not be a good candidate for dental implants. In that case, site restoration treatments might be recommended. Jawbone site restoration is a dental practice to help encourage bone growth in a specific area of the mouth and is often done before dental implants if necessary.

Dental Implant Timeline

Before you receive dental implants you will need to schedule a consultation with our team. During that consultation your dentists will examine you, take X-rays and scans, and identify if you are good candidate for dental implants or if a different procedure might be better suited for your specific case.

In some cases you may need treatments like jawbone site restoration or tooth extraction. This is dependent on your specific case. But if you need these treatments they will be handled before your dental implant treatment.

Once you are ready for your dental implant, you will schedule a dental appointment with your provider and they will place your implant into your mouth. The implant post is placed under the gums and overtime it fuses to the jaw bone.

The initial healing process can take about 1-2 weeks. Your dentist will provide post-care instructions, diet recommendations, and schedule follow-up appointments as needed. After that initial healing process is complete, your implant will continue to fuse to the jawbone. This can take a few months.

After the dental implant post has fully integrated itself into your mouth a dental abutment piece is attached to the implant post. This abutment piece sits outside of the gums. After this is placed, the false tooth is attached to the abutment.
